Skyline FAQ
Frequently asked questions about Skyline solar water heating systems.
How much will it cost me?When financed through SMUD, solar water heating costs a little bit more than what you already pay SMUD for electric water heating. If you choose to go solar, you will have a net monthly payment of $4.39-$10.15. However, there is a $1,408-$1,558 federal tax credit to offset those payments, and you will see a net savings of $1,286-$1,505 in the first year. For the following 1-3 years you will pay SMUD a little bit extra, but your cash flow will always remain positive and it will never fall below $1,131-$1,495. In ten years, you will see $1,975-$3,281 of accumulated net savings.Download detailed financial projections. Learn more... How much money will I save?SMUD savings range from $474-$561 the first year, and as energy prices climb sky high you will see your savings multiply. What happens to my the value of my home? There are two in depth studies exploring the connection between energy efficiency and property values, “Evidence of Rational Market Valuations for Home Energy Efficiency” and “More Evidence of Rational Market Values for Home Energy Efficiency”. The studies were published by the Appraisal Journal, funded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and conducted by an independent, third party research organization. The studies say that for every $1 reduction in annual utility bills, property value will increase by at least $10. Therefore, if you decide to buy a Skyline solar water heater, you will see your property appreciate by about $5,612-$7,015 in the first year, and the best part is that the property appreciation will grow as energy costs shoot through the roof. In the tenth year, your property will have appreciated by about $9,482-$11,853. Download the reports. Learn more... Propylene Glycol (antifreeze) is circulated through solar collectors on your roof where heat is gathered from the sun. The heated glycol flows to a special tank with an internal heat exchanger that transfers the heat to your household water. A small solar electric panel powers the system and regulates its operation, so it is completely automated and self sufficient. The system will automatically operate when there is solar energy available and the tank stores the heated water for future use and serves as a backup water heater when required.Learn more...
